About Buddhist Traditions

Buddhism encompasses many schools and traditions, each offering its own path to awakening. The three main branches differ in their approaches to practice, philosophy, and meditation methods:

Theravada ("Teaching of the Elders") — relies on the Pali Canon and emphasizes personal vipassana practice
Mahayana ("Great Vehicle") — includes Zen, Chan, Pure Land, and Tibetan Buddhism traditions
Vajrayana ("Diamond Vehicle") — employs tantric practices and visualizations
