Sariputta
Who He Was
Born in the village of Nalaka near Rajagaha, the son of a brahmin. In his youth, together with his friend Moggallana, he left worldly life in search of truth. Upon hearing a single verse about conditionality (paticcasamuppada) from the Buddha’s disciple Assaji, he instantly penetrated the truth of the Dhamma and became a monk.
Qualities
Sariputta was “foremost among those of great wisdom” (etadagga), called the “General of the Dhamma” for his ability to systematize and transmit the teaching clearly, logically, and impeccably. He combined deep understanding with gentleness and humility, serving as a model of respect for the Teacher and care for fellow monks.
Known For
He laid the foundation for logical analysis of the Dhamma, explaining the most complex principles in simple (though not always) terms. Suttas featuring him are considered exemplars of analytical meditation. He mentored many who subsequently attained liberation. A master of jhanas and concentration.
Final Days
Sariputta died before the Buddha, peacefully, in his mother’s house, having given her a final teaching - and she too gained understanding of the Dhamma.
A Personal Observation
Judging by the suttas, Sariputta was not only remarkably intelligent but also quite the meticulous type. Reading suttas from him, you notice a deep digging into essence and detail, and a certain shift in language. And that is wonderful, because gradually different characters emerge behind the suttas. Gotama as the spiritual leader. Sariputta - one wants to call him not the general, but the engineer of the Dhamma. And others whom we will yet come to know.
