Noble Eightfold Path
Doctrine
The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching
The Noble Eightfold Path is the Fourth Noble Truth and the practical path to the cessation of suffering. It consists of eight interconnected factors distributed across three divisions. All factors are developed together (not sequentially), though at different times the emphasis may shift to a particular one.
Division I: Morality (Sila)
- Right Speech - abstaining from lying, harsh speech, slander, and idle chatter.
- Right Action - abstaining from killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct.
- Right Livelihood - honest occupation that causes no harm.
Division II: Concentration (Samadhi)
- Right Effort - abandoning the unwholesome, cultivating the wholesome.
- Right Mindfulness - attentiveness to body, feelings, mind, and mental phenomena.
- Right Concentration - developing one-pointedness of mind (ekaggata and jhanas).
Division III: Wisdom (Panna)
- Right View - understanding the Four Truths, kamma, and seeing the true nature of reality.
- Right Intention - aspiration toward the wholesome, goodwill, and liberation.
Practical Significance
The Eightfold Path is not a sequence of steps but a system of interconnected practices: morality brings peace, concentration provides clarity, wisdom strengthens morality. Together they lead to liberation.
